So excited to say that Marina and the Diamonds’ new album Froot is FINALLY here! I loved her first single “Obsessions” that came out back in ’09 and have been avidly following her and her music ever since.
The mix of disco, funk, and electropop, topped with her beautiful, always powerful vocals reels you in and doesn’t let go. Froot represents a new stage in her life, branching away from the manufactured pop princess alter-ego of her second album Electra Heart and adopts a fresh take, showing a new and inwardly-reflecting Marina, creating upbeat gems similar to her past dance-inducing chart-toppers, but also slower and intense ballads (“Happy”, “Immortal”) that cause you to close your eyes and revel in her captivating vocals.
Similar to singer Lily Allen, Marina uses her songs as social commentary and reflects on current issues such as rape culture and how female artists are treated in the industry. She also puts references of her personal life into lyrics she wrote entirely herself.
Recommended songs: I’m A Ruin, Happy, Froot, Can’t Pin Me Down (Just listen to all of them)
