A dui driver rear-ended an officer overnight at a traffic signal and then fled the scene.
Valparaiso police officer James Bovy was stopped at the traffic light on Lincolnway at Napoleon early this morning at 12:45 a.m. when a vehicle approached from behind traveling eastbound on Lincolnway and struck his marked squad car.
The pick-up truck stopped for a moment and then fled southbound on Napoleon Street. Officer Bovy attempted to stop the vehicle with his emergency lights and siren activated. The pick-up truck continued southbound on Napoleon at a slow speed and additional police units assisted officer Bovy. The driver finally stopped his vehicle at West Street and Marsh Street.
The driver of the truck was identified as Mitchell Aaron 30 years old of porter. Aaron displayed obvious signs of intoxication, failed multiple field sobriety tests and was arrested. Aaron was charged with resisting law enforcement (fleeing), leaving the scene of a crash and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, (level 6-felony for having a prior).
Mitchell was eventually transported to porter hospital and his blood alcohol level was tested at four times legal limit. Officer Bovy was not injured as a result of the crash.
